Raffle Layout
Each year, the Model Train Show presents a full-featured layout custom built by local modelers, complete with scenery, model locomotive and train, and a Digital Command Control (DCC) system. The layout can be won by purchasing raffle tickets at the show. Tickets will be available at 3 tickets for $5 or 1 ticket for $2. The winner will be chosen Sunday afternoon of the show. You Do Not Need To Be Present To Win. Layout can be delivered within a 50-mile radius of the show venue.
This year's layout is a 4' x 8' beautifully hand-crafted model railroad in HO scale. This layout is called the "The G.O.T. Railroad". The layout was designed by Robert Hunt, co-chairman of the layout project. Our interest this year is to get young folks interested in modern day railroading. The railroad depicts the small towns of Gordon, Oconee and Tennille Georgia (G.O.T.). The Norfolk Southern Corp. currently operates trains through this area. The region is famous for the worldwide supply of kaolin and timber for the paper industry and forest products. There is agriculture that is produced and transported and many small industries that produce products from the region. They move frieght trains either to Macon's Brosnan Yard to redistribute all over the US or to Savannah's Dillard Yard to export to all over the world.
We will be pulling our train this year by an Athearn EMD GP-38-2 low nose with dynamic brakes. The train consist will have some clay slurry tank cars, timber car, and a NS caboose. We will control the new layout with a brand new Digitrax Zephyr DCC system, generously donated by Digitrax. Using Digitral Command Control (DCC) allows you to control multiple trains simultaneously with better speed control for more prototypical operation.
We have constructed the Benchwork from 1x4's and 1x2's on a "cookie-cut" piece of 4x8 3/8-inch plywood. The roadbed is cork, sealed with gray paint and the track is Atlas code 83 with manual snap switches. The scenery will match the region of central Georgia with clay, dirt and trees.
Please stay tuned to our website for future updated photos of the progress of the G.O.T. RAILROAD .The work and craftsmanship is being provided by Georgia's #1 operating group, the North Atlanta Rail Barons. We look forward to the 2010 Cobb Galleria Trainshow presenting this to a lucky individual or family. This layout will make either a fine addition to a model railroader or a fine starter layout for an up and coming model railroader.
